Castles and palaces, temples and docks

March 15, 2009

What are you able to build with your blocks?
Castles and palaces, temples and docks.
Rain may keep raining, and others go roam,
But I can be happy and building at home.

-BLOCK CITY, Robert Louis Stevenson.

Writing cohesive stories in the start-middle-end fashion is one thing, but there’s so much left over. Stories are worlds, but what about everything that goes unremarked upon? Incidentals and asides. It has always seemed it would be a betrayal to some invisible order if I forget something that had power enough originally to impress itself. Consequently I have plenty of cheap falling-to-shit notebooks filled with bits of cipher. Now I also have wee HUnter4086 – an electronic falling-to-shit notebook. No editing or tarting-up, just some full steam ahead verbiage…the literary equivalent of spilling blocks out onto the floor. Let’s build a space fort!
